Word Sorting is Powerful Practice that has many forms.  Word sorting works on the premise that when we categorise or sort things related to how similar or different they are, we need to pay close attention to those items.  When learning new words and how to read and spell them, paying close attention to their features is essential.  You can use sorting integrated into your spelling program to focus students' attention on the features of words and how words work.  Many teachers using the "Words Their Way" spelling resources make some use of word sorting to extend and consolidate skills.  Here we encourage you to be creative with the ways you work with words with your students, so that they get maximum opportunity to think like spellers and readers who learn words and retain them.
