Teaching scientific vocabulary

Vocabulary is vitally important in high school and especially in Science, which has its own specific language and a lot of terminology for students to wade through.  Without good vocabulary, students can't read the text books, they can't write well and their academic performance suffers.  Students with good vocabulary just do better at school - it's that simple.  Improving vocabulary is the first step to lift reading, writing, and academic performance, especially at schools with large numbers of ESL students who struggle to read and write sophisticated texts.  At high school, teachers often give students long lists of definitions, yet there are many far more effective strategies to lodge new vocab in student's heads.
