Teaching the unique vocabulary of Maths

Vocabulary is vitally important in high school Maths because without it, students can't read the problems, and if they can't read the problems, they can't do the maths.  Maths has its own unique jargon - the words "product" and "difference" have specific meanings in Maths, and unless they are taught about it students will misunderstand, like the boy who had been learning about right angles and then asked the teacher about "left angles".  Teaching vocabulary will lift academic performance in Maths, especially at schools with large numbers of ESL students who struggle to read Maths word problems.  Students with good vocabulary just do better in all subjects, even Maths - it's that simple.
