Navigating Thinking 1: Ramping-up Reading Comprehension

Workshop purpose

Unique to ALL schools, Navigating Thinking is the cornerstone of our approach to developing high-achieving ‘thinking readers’.  It integrates all strands of the Australian curriculum for English, and provides rich instructional maps for thinking in a wide range of genre, at multiple year levels.  Navigating Thinking promotes powerful meta-cognitively focused comprehension instruction that is engaging, challenging and effective.

What’s involved?

Workshop participants will learn about the Navigating Thinking philosophy, research base and curriculum tools used in Navigating Thinking Schools.

You will learn how to

  • ramp up your reading instruction to promote strategic thinking, quality talk and accelerated student learning.
  • structure your teaching to enhance opportunities for students to reflect, justify, synthesise and evaluate texts of all kinds.
  • promote rich discussion and collaboration to foster students’ higher order thinking skills.
  • explore rich curriculum maps that make your planning for differentiated instruction easy and effective.

Navigating Thinking 2: Curriculum Innovations- Raising the Bar in Reading

Workshop purpose

Workshop participants will extend their knowledge of the Navigating Thinking approach, research base and curriculum tools used in Navigating Thinking Schools.

What’s involved?

You will participate in learning to critically analyse the role of high quality talk and get access to "tools for talking" that promote meta-cognition for all kinds of readers.

You will learn how to

  •     structure your teaching to enhance opportunities for students to reflect, justify, synthesise and evaluate texts of all kinds.
  •     promote rich discussion and collaboration to foster students’ higher order thinking skills.
  •     explore rich curriculum maps that make your planning for differentiated instruction easy and effective.

You will take away

  • talking tools.
  • planning templates for innovating with Navigating Thinking.
  • models of Navigating Thinking frames in two genres.
  • the know-how to use the Navigating Framework effectively as part of a comprehensive approach to improving teaching, learning and student achievement.
