Helping students who struggle to read in SOSE

Reading fluency is something few high school teachers will have heard of, but it's incredibly important because it directly affects comprehension and in turn, academic performance - they're all linked.  Many high school students are not fluent readers.  This is a problem because while they struggle to decipher the words on the page, there is not enough brain processing space available for understanding what they've just read. The meaning goes clean over their heads and they don't learn a thing. Stumbling over words and lacking expression is a sign of poor fluency, as is the admission that they have no idea what they just read.  There is a simple cure and it is practice, practice and more practice.  The more words a students reads, hears and sees, the better they will get.
