Workshop purpose

This whole day workshop is the first in a two-workshop series. It introduces participants to a new research-based approach to teaching reading comprehension called Navigating Thinking.

What is Navigating Thinking?

Unique to ALL schools, Navigating Thinking is the cornerstone of our approach to developing high-achieving ‘thinking readers’.  It integrates all strands of the Australian curriculum for English, and provides rich instructional maps for thinking in a wide range of genre, at multiple year levels.  Navigating Thinking promotes powerful meta-cognitively focused comprehension instruction that is engaging, challenging and effective.

What’s involved?

Workshop participants will learn about the Navigating Thinking philosophy, research base and curriculum tools used in Navigating Thinking Schools.

You will learn how to

  • structure your teaching to enhance opportunities for students to reflect, justify, synthesise and evaluate texts of all kinds.
  • promote rich discussion and collaboration to foster students’ higher order thinking skills.
  • explore rich curriculum maps that make your planning for differentiated instruction easy and effective.
