Making Vocabulary Instruction Work in your HPE Classroom

Who is this workshop designed for?

Years 7-9 HPE Teachers and HODs

What is this workshop about?

How do I provide rich and varied language experiences that support learning and using vocabulary? Do I spend time to teach individual words? What type or word-learning strategies have I taught my students to help them increase their vocabularies? In what ways do I develop word consciousness and appreciation for word learning?

We will guide you through how to stimulate students' awareness of and interest in words so they can enjoy a language-rich environment. You will be able to use Thinking Tools with students to expand word knowledge independently.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Develop teaching strategies for promoting a word-conscious HPE classroom, based around academic and topic specific vocabulary
  • Use a range of Thinking Tools for promoting vocabulary learning in all levels of ability, from EALD students to those who are accessing more sophisticated Higher Order Thinking skills
  • Focus attention on academic vocabulary to develop an informed appreciation of literature and non-fiction texts.
