Helping students comprehend what they read in English

Academic achievement in high school is directly linked to comprehension.  Many high school students gain little or nothing from the texts they are given, because they just can't understand them.  Teaching comprehension will not only improve your students' academic performance in your class, but will lift their achievement across the board in every subject.  Ultimately, the aim is for comprehension strategies to become so ingrained that students leave high school as expert, independent readers.
